A Silent Voice: How to Draw Guilt

As a member of the romance family, shoujo manga seems to be particularly under appreciated in a critical sense. While many romance manga pieces may not shine in the ways Western critics are expecting to find, they have qualities that can still be shocking and powerful. So I’d really like to point out a few manga series that have impressed me, starting with Yoshitoki Oima’s A Silent Voice.

This comic is about Shoya Ishida, a rambunctious boy who meets the new girl in elementary school called Shoko Nishimiya. As Shoko is deaf, Shoya and his classmates resist accepting her disability and resent their teachers for expecting them to accommodate her needs. The entire class begins to bully Shoko in more and more cruel ways, breaking her hearing aids and carving harsh words into her desk. Shoya ends up on the crest of this wave of viciousness, and when Shoko is forced to move to another school, the blame is levelled solely at him.

Shoya grows up with a bad reputation and he is ostracised by students who were once his friends, bullied in similar ways that Shoko experienced. Realising the pain he put her through, he grows to hate himself more and more, until six years later when he sees Shoko again. While limited by his self-loathing and guilt, he is driven by the same feelings to somehow make up for what he took from Shoko.

It’s interesting to read quotes recommending this work as ‘heartwarming’ – certainly, the story moves toward recovering from trauma and improving relationships, but I didn’t expect to be confronted with such dark themes in an apparently ‘heartwarming’ romance. But it’s a good surprise. The themes in this comic are already extremely complex, but Oima faces them head on. She doesn’t hesitate to depict reprehensible cruelty among children, while simultaneously showing a kind of forgiveness. Hatred is born of ignorance and it perpetuates itself and sweeps people along with it. No one close to Shoko’s traumatic experiences emerges without pain and regret.

Yet each character deals with it differently. Some students deny their involvement in the bullying, while Shoya destroys himself over it, and Shoko’s feelings remain fairly mysterious for a lot of the story. But I realised in later volumes that I didn’t fully understand Shoko, much like Shoya, because I was perceiving her from my own point of view. I felt like she should feel either resentful or forgiving of others’ behaviour, but it didn’t occur to me that she would also be judging herself.

In a lot of fiction, I find that characters are attacked and violated without much pause to speculate on the effect it would have on them. The plot moves on to the next fight scene and the characters don’t change that much. A Silent Voice is an in-depth study on the ways that a traumatic experience shapes you and holds on to you for years, if not your entire life. Shoya returns his ostracism with his own disregard of others, shown with thick black crosses over characters’ faces until they’re able to get through to him somehow. He considers his life to be over when it’s barely begun.

Shoya’s character design itself was surprisingly appropriate. Most main characters in manga, certainly in romance manga, have large, expressive eyes, while Shoya has decidedly small dots as his eyes and a fairly harsh appearance. Yet these guarded, contracted irises speak of his perpetual wariness, fear and pain.

Shoya looks like a bully, even when he is one and even when he isn’t. Only by reading the comic can you know him well enough to decide for yourself. His facial design and some of his internal sequences were the most palpable depictions of complete unexpressed anguish and guilt that I have ever seen. It makes it sound like the comic is very unpleasant to read but it’s cathartic and comforting to feel less alone with the things I am ashamed of about myself, things I regret, or the things about myself I most want to hide.

And it’s also a very sweet romance. Both Shoya and Shoko have many psychological obstacles to overcome in order to reach each other, but it’s beautiful to see them get closer with every volume.

If you’re looking for a well-wrought manga series, don’t go past A Silent Voice. The sixth volume is out now and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I hope you enjoyed my apparently annual blog post! I finished Honours a couple of months ago and there was a whole bunch of life changes that came with that. But now I’m getting ready to release a superhero comic called Hail (see the ‘News’ page of this blog) online in a few months. I’ve been working hard! And the team of artists I’m working with are already really inspiring – they’re awesome people. Anyway, once things stabilise a bit in my life, I look forward to writing more articles for y’all.

I wrote the above short comic after dinner last night when I was losing momentum with my work. When you start doing larger projects it takes a while before you get any gratification, and I thought it’d be cool to just make something in one sitting. It ended up taking me until 2am to finish, so it was a long sitting, haha. The point was to do it in the fastest way possible – I didn’t erase much and didn’t bother with much planning. I should try to remember how good it is, to just do what your body and mind are asking you for (rest, play, sponaneity, etc)… I feel like it has given me a way back into my other work.

Passing for Well

For people with illnesses that are not always visible to observers, the concept of ‘passing’ may be quite familiar. For them it means passing as healthy under the everyday perceptions of their peers. Many of us have experienced passing from a perspective of race, sexuality, religion, or politics, and it is always for the same reason: avoiding prejudice. Managing long-term illness is a difficult task in many unexpected ways.

It’s important to question why ill people should choose to be inauthentic in their lives. Judith L. Alpert suggests in her work, ‘Loss of Humanness: The Ultimate Trauma’ (2012) that an ill person may find themselves excluded from various activities because they may be seen as a weak person who must be treated delicately; certainly not a person that one can ‘argue with, depend on, or treat as an equal.’ This makes them seem less desirable romantically, socially, and in a work environment. It’s logical to want to avoid this.

Long-term illness implies unreliability. In a job interview I take care not to mention my own chronic illness (unless asked directly) even though it has a huge effect on my life. While it is illegal to discriminate, employers can find other reasons not to employ someone if they believe the person will be a drain on the company. It’s in the nature of chronic illness to have to continue meeting the demands of your life regardless of how unwell you are, and I have a history of taking fewer sick days than most other employees. But the stigma surrounding illness is difficult to undermine.

Particularly when confronted with more severe illnesses, there can be a strange fear of even being around the ill person in those who are comparatively well. As Alpert points out, it is not unheard of for a medical practitioner to demand that a breast cancer patient should get a prosthetic replacement to ‘elevate the spirits of people in the doctor’s office.’ It is considered admirable to hide signs of our pain; R. Murphy states in ‘The Body Silent’ (1990) that ‘the person who smiles and jokes while in obvious physical misery is honoured by all.’

The reasons for passing can have a focus on the perceived needs of the ill person. Observers may support someone in their choice to pass because they don’t want to remind them of their suffering. For example, if someone is crying, many would assume that they are embarrassed by their outburst and try to support them in their return to a calm facade by changing the subject or making jokes. Often this is legitimately what the person wants. If the nature of long-term illness requires a lot of ‘soldiering on’, there are certainly days when someone even simply asking about your health will make this much harder. Because the moment someone asks about it you may cry, and you may not be able to stop crying. And you have shit to do.

Sometimes people with invisible illnesses also simply want to exercise their freedom to choose who knows about their condition. If I walk to uni hunched over, breathing loudly, pausing occasionally to lie on the ground in the foetal position to wait for a wave of pain to pass, I will probably feel compelled to explain my strange behaviour to the strangers who witness it.  In particular my illness, chronic IBS, is one of many that are considered ugly and shameful because it affects bowel movements. I am not yet above that shame. And I don’t actually want to explain myself to the whole world, so I pretend I’m fine and the only reason I’m walking this slow is because I’m being leisurely today.

While passing is a practical solution for avoiding the results of social stigma, and while it makes getting through the day easier, it creates regular inauthenticity in your life. It might not sound like a big deal, but it has a huge effect on the way you feel, and creates discrepancies in how you understand yourself and in the way others will choose to treat you. In a way, you are lying on a daily basis. It makes you feel disconnected from the people in your life. You don’t know if they are friends with an incomplete picture of you.

You begin to take measures to pass automatically and lose your connection to the truth. You can lose your gauge of how bad your symptoms are until you’ve reached the point of collapse. Things get much worse than they should have before you could have noticed and taken measures to look after yourself better. It inhibits your connection with your body, which inhibits your management of the symptoms.

People are also less likely to understand you if you are deliberately distorting the signals you communicate to them about how you’re feeling. They are less likely to believe you when you try to explain how bad it is. They don’t know how to help you, and they will probably miss your signals in situations when you no longer have a choice but to depend on their help.

For the ill person, passing is an opportunity to find control in a situation that is entirely out of their control. They may not be able to get well any time soon, but they can at least have some power over how people perceive them. They can avoid some of the social disadvantages of having a long-term illness and they can feel courageous in doing so.

My dad told me recently that he was proud of how well I hide my illness. It could sound like he’s proud of me for hiding my shameful secret or something, but I think he really meant that he’s proud that I have found a way to cope and that I’m pretty good at it. From a practical, survival point of view, passing is a good idea for me. But if you choose to pass, it’s important to balance that by remaining authentic with a few people that you love and trust.

I find that most people don’t want to know about illness. Even if they brought it up, and I joke and I understate and I try to fit my explanation into only one or two sentences, they seem instantly bored or irritated. I don’t know if they think I’m making it up, or if they don’t think it’s as bad as I’m saying. But these days whenever someone tells me they’re struggling, I not only believe them, but I assume it’s probably much worse.

Fantasy as Escapism

I’ve heard too many people argue that the best thing about the fantasy genre is ‘escapism’. Fantasy can indeed be an absorbing, relaxing means of forgetting our own problems for a while, but all fiction can do this. Fiction depicts a facet of reality, but even realism is not a perfect clone of our world. All fiction takes us away from our lives while simultaneous reflecting them. However, the argument that escapism is fantasy’s greatest quality is somewhat counter-intuitive.

We’re all very welcome to have preferences for whatever genre we’d like of course, but unfortunately some people completely dismiss fantasy as ‘stories about wizards’, ‘elves and dragons’, or ‘stories for children’. These definitions cover Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter in an overly patronising and simplistic fashion, and that’s about it. The trouble is, the concept of ‘escapism’ fuels this perception of fantasy as a flight from the complexity and significance of reality.

Fantasy obviously has fewer superficial connections to reality than realism, but it focuses instead on psychological or emotional truths. Fantasy often follows a ‘quest’ structure, in which the protagonist faces an overwhelmingly powerful enemy, and this enemy symbolises the challenges we face in our own lives that seem insurmountable. However, even the fantasy texts without a strict formula use metaphor to render emotional struggles tangible. Kate Forsyth once claimed that fantasy can portray ‘moral truths too bright and too fierce to gaze upon directly.’

The advantage of the fantasy genre in representing emotional reality is that an entire world can be constructed to support the metaphor, from the implications of its political system to its aesthetic references. Giving readers a translation of emotion into sights, sounds and smells encourages a stronger sense of empathy, as they can react personally to the scenario rather than trying to understand an abstract idea amid the distractions and inconsistencies of our world. For those who relate to the metaphors, there is also a sense of validation. A person may get a tattoo because they feel their journey should have left visible scars; fictional representations of emotional struggles are similarly authenticating.

The concept of magic within a narrative rebalances negotiations of power. Characters with a strong connection to magic are always the most passionate; spiritual or emotional power is usually linked to magical talent. Consider Harry Potter and Voldemort’s strong senses of what is right in the world, despite their opposing approaches. Magic is often the one thing that gives power to an originally disempowered or undervalued protagonist. Fantasy traditionally rewards good behaviour and the villains lose the battle in the end, giving the impression of a sympathetic, just universe. Such narratives can be inherently empowering.

I attribute the surge in fantasy’s popularity in Western culture to a heightened sense of insignificance in our society. Many people have a sense of political disempowerment and futility. The development of the internet has also made us increasingly aware of how many people there are aside from us in the world, all speaking at once and desperate to be heard. It’s entirely understandable that we should seek fiction that reminds us that everyone is capable of changing the world.

While I agree that plenty of fantasy books are not very well-written, I would say there is about the same ratio of bad to good quality fantasy books as there are realist books. The only difference is that publishers are allowing a great deal more fantasy books to be sold due to the current surge of popularity. Btu regardless of the quality of writing, I think it’s great that the market is so open to the genre because its aesthetic possibilities are limitless and it is a comparatively unexplored form.

Like and genre, fantasy has specific strengths and purpose that it performs extremely well. As a writer, I have a strong emotional focus and fantasy is the best possible choice to convey my meaning. But I certainly still haven’t fully explored the possibilities of fantasy or speculative fiction. It’s important to be able to articulate the value of a genre, and there is so much more to fantasy than many people realise.

You can dance if you want to~

Probably one of the biggest reasons that pushed me into dance was the realisation that exercise is extremely boring and unpleasant. I’d been telling myself I was too old to learn dance since primary school age, but really I think it just took me a while to learn how to handle the state of not already knowing how to do something. So I decided I might as well just toughen up and try it.

Dance is a lovely thing I like to call ‘incidental fitness’.  You end up concentrating so much on learning the steps that you don’t really realise you’ve been working your body that hard until you emerge at the end of the class covered in sweat. But dance also leaves you in a great mood. It’s probably a combination of endorphins, the excitement of seeing yourself improve, and the general creativity among friends. Fitness and happiness are both essential contributors to better health.

But I was also surprised by how much it improved my perception of my body. I actually spend a fair bit of time feeling terrible about my appearance. But even on my worst days, dancing makes me feel like I’m okay. There have even been moments during classes that made me feel, for the first time in a while, that I could actually be beautiful. Regardless of their weight, gender, age, etc., everyone finds their own unique grace and allure.

Since the beginning of last year I’ve been sampling dance classes. So if you might be interested, here is a quick run-down of a few popular styles.

Irish Dancing is the happiest dance ever. It’s about community, friendship and love. It’s simultaneously powerful and elegant, as well as wild and fast. I pretty much feel like a deer when I do it, and male Irish dancers remind me of stags. When you get into hard-shoe, you can really make the floor thunder beneath your feet. The dance is limited within its emotional range because it’s pretty much impossible to leap and skip in a sad way. It also rarely uses arm movement, which can feel a little rigid sometimes, but the complexity of the footwork makes up for it. This is also one of those dances that looks way more complicated than it is to actually do, so you’ll start to look like you’re good at it quite quickly. It’s very high impact and it will make your calves mega buff.

Ballet doesn’t feel as strict as it sometimes looks. Granted, any dance will feel more rigid when you start trying to perfect advanced technique and take it super seriously, but ballet can actually make you feel free. It’s fairly hard to get the technique perfect as a beginner; despite that, you can still look and feel pretty graceful from the start. The feet turnout takes a bit of getting used to. Ballet is perhaps not a very natural or instinctive way of dancing but it seems to be about transcendental strength, grace and nobility.

Contemporary blew my mind a bit. There isn’t much repetition or many patterns to follow and all of the steps kind of merge together. It’s very free and expressive – you can show a lot of emotions with it, though it’s generally got a bit of an angsty, passionate vibe. It looks great in ensemble or solo. One of its strongest principles is actually about efficient use of energy. Instead of controlling movement all the way, you relax your muscles completely whenever you can use gravity instead. That’s what gives contemporary that loose appearance. If you’re looking for structure I would look elsewhere, but a lot of people enjoy the simplicity of the movements and free expression.

Salsa is one of the few couples’ dances I tried. The trouble with couple dances is that you can’t practice without a partner, and you need to work as a team rather than just focusing on learning your moves on your own. But this can be a great benefit to some; you’re always in it together with your partner, you can learn from each other and laugh together. The steps and movements for this dance come more instinctively and naturally to me than any other, though everyone finds that certain dances suit them better. Salsa is really about flirting and showing off – in the best way possible. It’s fast, sexy and vivacious.

Belly dancing is surprisingly disciplined for something so exotic and sensuous. If trying all these dances at once was like trying to learn multiple languages at once, belly dancing was like adding sign language to the mix. While most dances balance movements within the body and show reactions all the way through the form, belly dancing emphasises isolation of body parts. Ideally, if you move your hips, no other part of your body should move with them. It’s a really interesting skill to learn and it looks pretty cool. Also, I never thought I’d be proud of any part of my body that jiggled when I wiggled, but this dance really makes you love your lady lumps. It’s low-impact but gently works your core, as well as your legs and arms. You also get to wear a coin scarf around your waist so that the chinking sounds help you refine your movement. Despite what you might expect, guys can do it too – look up videos online; they’re pretty amazing.

Hiphop makes an interesting combination of loose and controlled movements. It uses some body parts in isolation and makes some big slamming motions as well as almost robotically smooth moves. It gives you stacks of confidence and is a great release for anger and attitude. It seems to usually be about showing off and proving your point; it’s fairly masculine and has a lot of wide stances and posturing, but it does rock the hips and curves too.

Illness and negative perception of your body often results in perceiving your body as an obstacle. Learning how to dance gives you freedom of spontaneous self-expression that acknowledges your whole identity: mind, heart and body. Dance is the undeniable reminder of the implicit strength and beauty that lies in all of us.

My Disturbingly Possible Eventual Motherhood

Every now and again, something on TV or the internet will remind me about my eggs. They’re dying. Did you know that girls are all born with their whole lifetime’s worth of eggs in their ovaries, and as time passes, they continuously die? So I’m feeling the pressure a little bit. I’m still studying and that’s all I need to concentrate on right now, but I can constantly feel how rapidly life is slipping away. And I don’t want inaction to make the decision for me.

There are other pressures, aside from my body clock. Choosing whether or not to have kids is like choosing between two significantly different ways of life – there’s no halfway point; you either commit to raising a child, or you don’t. I think my partner wants kids. He’s the loveliest person in the world and the only person I’d even consider having children with, so he insists that it’s entirely up to me, and he’d love a family with me, even if it’s just the two of us. Because he’s lovely. Which means the path both of our lives follow is entirely up to me. Oh god.

Most women like babies, but when someone shows me a photo of one I’m pretty indifferent. They seem to expect some sort of reaction though. It’s like we’re not allowed to not want children; maybe people see it as selfish or antisocial. But just because women can incubate babies doesn’t mean it’s their calling – I can drive, but that doesn’t make me a taxi driver. I’m not that fond of kids. I work at a supermarket, so I rarely see one that isn’t trying to hurt people with the sound of its screaming because it can’t get a lolly right now. But then you meet that one rare child that smiles at you genuinely. And this one is polite and selfless, and you love her instantly.

The trouble is, having a child is horrific. We begin with the continuous discomfort and indignity of pregnancy, when your body is stretched to breaking point, and then there’s the actual childbirth, in which a small human being tears its way out of your body through a very small hole between your legs. And then you actually have a kid, which means working with poop and vomit and old food; arguments with a resentful teenager; staying at home to make sure you show that you love them enough; inevitably messing them up somehow regardless of how you approach parenting; and losing your career aspirations, your hobbies – your life. When I think about having a kid, I can’t help but see it as my life sacrificed for theirs. And I don’t want to die yet. Life is short enough.

But then, love is the most important thing in life. Certainly more important than health or creative fulfilment, or ambition or vanity. I’ve asked a small sample of mothers why on earth they had kids and if they regretted it. They always give me a long list of why it sucks, and then one reason for making it all worth it: love. If I stop freaking out for a moment, having a child seems like it’s about giving someone exactly what I value most: life. Maybe someone else deserves that. Maybe there’s something nice about creating a person with the one you love most, who is a part of both of you… just so that you have another person to love and take care of. It sounds beautiful. And if the choice was taken away from me, I would be something beyond devastated.

I’ve thought of a solution. I will be the father. I won’t have to birth the child or be pressured to give up my dreams and stay at home. I’ll get all the rewards of children without the sacrifice. And if my uterus gets in the way of this plan, maybe my body will somehow still be functional after being torn apart like all the mothers I’ve met. Maybe my partner will be lovely enough to share the task of raising them. Maybe what I do sacrifice will be worth it.

Maybe.

Fun with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Long-term illness is an experience I could never fully understand until it happened to me. I’d always had random inexplicable stomach aches as a kid, but then nearly two years ago my body broke. For the three months before I could figure out what it was, I had diarrhoea approximately five times a day almost every day. I was always a bit nauseous, with a bit of pain, and pretty frequently in a lot of pain. Welcome to the magical world of chronic Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Unfortunately, IBS is not a disease – it’s just a body not functioning too well – so it can’t be cured. Regardless of how strictly I diet, a wave of stress or hormones can have me incapacitated for days. But IBS can be managed.

I saw a whole bunch of doctors who gave me things that made it worse or had no effect, until I saw one who gave me a drug. I had to take it three times a day, and it stopped the pain. It was amazing. It did concern me, however, that it also stopped me from pooping at all. This was clearly not a sustainable solution. At the moment I thought I actually couldn’t take it for much longer, a friend recommended a naturopath. She told me what foods I couldn’t eat (all the fun things) and what I could eat (meat, veg, seeds, leaves). The diet made an almost instant change.

It’s hard for lots of reasons. My food bill almost eats up my entire fortnightly pay – for example, you’d be amazed how expensive the only honey and fruit free muesli on the market will cost. It’s also surprisingly hard to rely on others to keep you alive, due to guilt and self-loathing and whatnot. I should probably also mention the actual symptoms: I’ve felt a little bit sick at some point almost every day for over a year. It’s like your brain is drowned in nausea; all your thoughts are muffled and every action takes more effort. There is a haze between you and others; you can’t speak or joke as well, or produce work the way you used to, and you can see the change even if others can’t. It’s like watching your true potential slip away.

When I’m healthy I feel like my body is a part of me; it can express how I feel and who I am. The sicker I am, the more separated my body and my identity become. On bad days I look down at my body shivering beneath me, pain knifing through my stomach and waves of nausea crashing down, and it feels like my bones are fraying, and I think, Wow. Things are falling apart down there. It’s just kind of funny in that moment. And that’s when I know my body is not so much a part of me, but more of a wall between me and the world.

There’s a weird sort of loneliness in going to a party and not being able to share some chocolate with your friends. And a weird sort of loneliness in the fact that you know most people can’t understand because there are things about the illness that you can never tell anyone. My illness isn’t pretty. Someone once told me that no illness is beautiful, but I still feel that if all I had was the pain I wouldn’t be so ashamed of it. Whenever I have to tell someone that I have IBS, I always go bright red and/or want to cry. One time someone asked me what IBS was, and since I couldn’t bring myself to say, ‘Irritable Bowel Syndrome’, I ended up saying, ‘Lots o’ poopin’’ and nodding matter-of-factly. Quick thinking, Miranda. That sounds SO much better.

As an IBS sufferer I have become quite adept at calculating the likelihood that I will make it from one location to another without needing a bathroom. It can be quite a gamble. I make sure I don’t go anywhere for long if it doesn’t have an accessible bathroom. I also have numerous techniques for achieving audible privacy in various bathroom scenarios. I go to the furthest bathroom from people as possible, or hide behind the sound of talking at parties. In public loos I predict flush times and hide behind that noise, or (worst-case scenario), I just go for it and then don’t leave my stall until all the people who would know it was me have left. It’s freakin’ hilarious, but only in retrospect. I have to think about my bowel movement strategies far more than anyone should.

The disability access plan at uni is my best friend: It’s extremely hard to get a doctor certificate when I need to prove that I’m too sick to leave my house.  People understand. I hate the idea of disability stopping me from following my dreams and people allow me to keep going. And the truth is, people understand because pretty much everyone has a big crap thing to deal with, health-based or otherwise. Maybe we can all afford patience for weakness because we know it intimately ourselves.

IBS taught me that. Regardless of all the crap I go through to manage it, if you’ll excuse my choice of words, I can’t bring myself to regret the experience. I can live with this illness and that makes it a blessing. Because every day I manage IBS, I learn more about allowing myself to rest; forgiving myself for weakness; and understanding others in similar situations. I had a terrible diet and lifestyle before I got sick, and I don’t think anything short of illness would have persuaded me to fix my life – this illness will thus make me significantly healthier in the long run. It reminds me constantly to turn my priorities back to a focus on health and a more direct pursuit of fulfilment than my usual intense career focus. IBS has taught me just how strong I can be. Knowing that you’ll be okay regardless of some of the depths you can sink to changes how you live. I thank God for IBS almost as much as I ask him to help me through it. And when I think about it, I realise that most bad things rarely produce purely bad results, because we always learn from them.

So next time you think about that big problem in your life, I guess I just want you to know that it doesn’t make you weak. Every moment you still haven’t given up is a moment of strength. Second of all, while you’re alone in some ways, you’re never alone in every way. And finally, consider what good things your challenges have brought to your life. When you tell yourself it will be okay, remember how true that really is. It will be okay.

I Have a Crush on Everyone

I have always found people beautiful. But until recently I’ve never been able to tell if it was objectively true, or if it was just my subjective understanding. My dad often scares people because he looks like a bikie – he’s a big guy with a shaved head, a beard and a weathered face.  But I think he’s one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever seen. So I know there is a discrepancy sometimes between how I see people and how the majority sees people.

Whilst any assessment of beauty is subjective, I refer to ‘objective beauty’ as that which would be agreed upon by most people. Signs of health, for example, are objectively beautiful – like clear skin, clean teeth and bright eyes. These things are generally considered to be good. A subjective understanding of beauty is a result of love. Of course you think your friends and family members are beautiful. It’s even obvious that you’ll find strangers beautiful, if you assume whatever you see in them is good. You’re not seeing their outside appearance – or if you are, you’re seeing it bathed in the glow of who they are.

So I was resigned to never glimpsing an objective superficial understanding of people, until I enrolled in the first year art topic, Drawing and Design Fundamentals. During these classes, we were basically told to start drawing what we could see. We were encouraged to stop seeing people and objects as images to which we had attached significance. Rather than drawing an eye as the symbolic circle within an almond shape, we were to draw the lines and shadows that our minds would translate into an impression of the eye. When I drew a person, I stopped seeing her as everything I knew she was, but simply as a collection of lines and contrasting tones.

Now that I wasn’t acknowledging in my mind the personal significance of what I was seeing, I could focus more on an isolated understanding of aesthetic. That was when I realised that beauty wasn’t at all in my head. I started marvelling over the curves of wrists, brows and ankles – things that I would never have found exceptional before. I revelled in every new model, because by tracing all of their perfect lines I could pin down another unique form. I wanted to blurt out how beautiful they were, and why, throughout the entire process. The truth is, dear reader, people are just as gloriously beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. Now I can’t help but swoon over everyone I see – and there is literally no one without something that makes them gorgeous.

But then, if I focus entirely on a person as a group of lines alone, my drawing often finishes up not quite true to life. Somehow I don’t quite grasp the whole image; there’s no soul in it. So now, whenever I draw, I try to swap back and forth between seeing a person as a meaningless image and seeing them in their ‘glow.’ I try to impress upon the paper both their objective aesthetic and the identity that lights up their entire form. It’s the only way I can make my drawings work. It seems that, regardless of how superficially lovely a person can look, their spirit is an essential part of their beauty.

I am writing this article mostly because I want people to know how amazing they are. When I see a person and think about how great they look, I don’t usually say anything. I would be disturbed myself if a stranger approached me and gushed about the lines of my shoulders, or how the light makes the hair on my forearms look like sparks. I can tell a person that I like their clothing, or their jewellery, but there’s something very personal about commenting on a person’s body – even if it’s complimentary. I think it’s because it is proof that you have been looking at them more closely than they would like. So I ignore the impulse to vocalise my inner swooning. But you, reader, must know that you are beautiful. It’s too easy to forget.

So while I can’t talk to you personally and point out all the ways you look fantastic, I can talk about the one thing we all have in common: eyes. No matter who you are or what you don’t like about your face or body, your irises are two perfect circles in the midst of all the organic, asymmetrical lines of your form. Two perfect circles, filled with delicate mixes of colour that can be likened to the explosions of light found among the stars; to the delicate fibres of bright coral; or to whatever your conception is of magic. Eyes are beautiful on a phenomenal level. We express most of ourselves through our eyes. This means eyes are the visible connection between our physical beauty and our inner beauty. Your eyes are perfect. You are perfect. No one is an exception.

So if anyone comes up to you in the future and tells you that you have amazing ankles, please don’t be scared. Maybe she’s not a creepy stalker – maybe she’s just a creepy artist.

Why Can’t We Be Friends?

I’m an optimistic person when it comes to the possibility of innocent, platonic relationships between men and women. But when I happened upon the above quote in John Fowles’ The Magus, rather than scoffing as I usually do at such a cynical idea, I stopped to fear that it could be true. Of course I soon confirmed by scouring past experiences that every light-hearted opposition between men and women does not have to be somehow sexual. But I think people sometimes question their friendships with the opposite sex. These relationships seem to have a layer of complication that we don’t experience with the same gender.

There are plenty of traps one can fall into in pursuit of a platonic relationship with the opposite sex. For example, if you’re actually soul mates, you will definitely not be able to remain just friends. Before I fell in love with my partner he was my very favourite example of how a man and a woman can be extremely close without stumbling across any pesky romantic impulses. I almost didn’t want to date him just so that I could stick it to the cynics – but by then I was far too busy wanting to have his beautiful blue-eyed babies. Soul mates: it’s a trap.

Admittedly when one is single and occasionally feeling lonely, one does tend to question one’s existing relationships with the opposite sex in the hopes of finding romantic potential. And even if we don’t find any real potential, the idea of creating romance for romance’s sake has its appeal. The simple logic is, ‘We have a lot of fun together, you look alright – maybe we should have sex.’ Beneath interactions with the opposite sex, there’s a certain underlying sense of possibility. This may be what Fowles is considering in his statement: if a man and a woman play a game together, they have a comfortable vantage point for observing each other’s ‘potential’. They can test the boundaries of this potential, express their skill or dominance, flirt, and tease each other. This is fine if they’re actively seeking romantic discourse.

The trouble is that, when you become close friends with someone, you inevitably love them. And even if it’s not romantic love, I’ll bet it must look like it sometimes when your eyes light up when you see them; when you’re supportive and excited for them; and when you share all your secrets with them. And if you’re trying to figure out what romantic love looks like, it’s easy to mistake normal affection for the capital ‘L’ type Love.

If you do think you might have feelings for a friend, it’s definitely better to tell them regardless of whether you think they’ll reciprocate or not. A few years back, a male friend of mine asked me if I might be interested in more, and I knew that he simply wasn’t the one for me. We talked it out, promised each other we wouldn’t let it get awkward because we so much wanted to remain friends, and we did. This obviously doesn’t always work. I tried the same thing when I was in a similar situation again with a male friend – tried to talk it out in a calm fashion and move on together knowing exactly where we stood. But he never acted quite the same after that, which made it hard for me to act the same as well, and we drifted apart. That may be a sad result, but we didn’t stop seeing each other for any bitter reasons and we could easily hang out again today. We can only move forward if we know where we stand.

Ultimately, if one of you doesn’t want to be just friends, it won’t happen. If you both feel the same way, you can start a relationship and have happy rainbow glitter times. But if only one of you can’t help but flirt all the time and test the other’s ‘potential’, they will only be creeped out or confused, and this can never have a satisfying result. Either way it’s not a friendship anymore. So if you want to be friends with the opposite sex, just make sure you know what you want, and then make sure they know it too. There are a few necessary conditions, but a friendship can be just as rewarding, exciting, beautiful and possible as romance can be between opposite sexes. This is exactly why millions of men and women are out there being ‘just’ friends right now.
